This piece was created a few years ago, in a season of grief for my grandmother Marianne, after she had gone away to spend time with the angels.
She came from a province in central Sweden called Gästrikland, shaped by forests, lakes and open fields. While working on this piece, I kept imagining what it might have been like to experience those places beside her.
I came to the conclusion that we probably would have had a wonderful time.
Hopping over old wooden fences. Picking beautiful wildflowers from the edges of the woods. Wandering through fields and forest paths, getting up to the sort of things you might do when no one is in much of a hurry.
That imagined little world became part of the piece. And although it was made in grief, I do not think grief is entirely tragic. I have come to think of the grief that follows losing someone you love as a kind of lost love — love that no longer has quite the same place to come home to.
But love has a way of finding its way home.
Sometimes, you just have to be a little patient with it.
