In old Scandinavian folklore, there are stories of great serpents that could take their own tails in their mouths, curl themselves into rings, and roll away like wheels.

Ringormar.

Ring — ring.
Ormar — snakes.

It is an oddly persistent image throughout humankind’s shared history. And it certainly doesn’t appear only in Scandinavia. The same shape appears elsewhere, too: a serpent eating its own tail, closing its body into a circle.

This archetypal image is known as the ouroboros.

It is a kind of metaphor for circles and cycles. Things coming to an end and, at the very same time, beginning again. One of the oldest known examples was found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, dating back to the 14th century BCE.

Humans really do remain human, don’t we? There is clearly something about serpents and circles that people have been thinking about for a very long time.

And these are a few of my own thoughts on the matter.

Five of them, to be more specific, on one piece of paper.
