Andromeda — also called M31 — is our closest spiral galaxy.

Only 2.5 million light-years away from you and me.

In Greek mythology, Andromeda was a princess, daughter of a king and a foolish queen — a fool who boasted that she and Andromeda were more beautiful than the sea nymphs. This angered Poseidon, the god of the sea, who sent a horrifying sea monster to punish the kingdom.

To save the kingdom, Andromeda was then left as a sacrifice for the monster to consume, chained to a rock by the sea.

But that was not to be her fate, you see — Perseus, a demigod hero, spotted her as he came flying past on his way home from killing Medusa (the monster whose gaze could turn people to stone). He saw Andromeda, heard her story, and promised to save her on the condition that they would marry.

She agreed.

When the sea monster rose from the water, Perseus fought it and killed it. He freed Andromeda from the chains. They later married and had seven sons and two daughters — or six sons and one daughter, depending on the source.

After her death, Andromeda was placed among the stars by the gods and became a constellation, joined forever in the sky with Perseus.

You can still see her up there somewhere. On a dark, clear, starry night, Andromeda appears to the naked eye as a pale blur of blue light, as she is spiralling out there in space, 2.5 million light-years away.

Materials

Acrylic on birch plywood.

Painted with acrylics on a beautiful slab of birch plywood, where the natural grain of the wood has determined how the brushes should move.

Technique

The painting technique devised in order to create this piece is Rebecka’s own, developed over years of curious experimentation. The technique seeks to create a sense of movement, depth, and luminosity while allowing the character of the wood itself to remain an active part of the work.

Frame included.

Frame

The frame has been hand constructed by Jakob at Lärjeå. Made from birch and treated with hardwax oil, it allows the character of the material to remain visible. A twisted brass hanging fixture provides a beautiful little detail that runs throughout the Genesis I collection.
